Licence class overlaps

Each licence class has its own set of distinct skills. However, some licence classes can also do other types of RBW.

Carpentry LBPs can work on:

the primary structure, including:

  • foundations and subfloor framing
  • floors
  • walls
  • roof
  • columns and beams
  • bracing.

the external moisture management system, including:

  • damp-proofing
  • roof and wall cladding and systems
  • waterproofing.

Carpentry LBPs can also do some work under 3 other licence classes:

  • Roofing
  • Brick and Blocklaying
  • Foundations

If specialist sub-contractors (such as window installers or aluminium flashing kit installers) are on site but not licensed, their RBW must be supervised by a carpentry LBP, who must then record this supervision in their record of work.

Roofing LBPs can work on or supervise the construction and/or installation of:

  • concrete or clay tile roof
  • profiled metal roof
  • metal tile roof
  • roof and deck membrane
  • torch on roof and deck membrane
  • liquid membrane roof and deck
  • shingle or slate roof
  • profiled metal wall cladding.

Carpentry LBPs and registered plumbers and gasfitters are also able to carry out some Roofing RBW. This recognises that they might make and flash penetrations for any roof type or install lightweight metal profiled roof as part of their work.

External Plastering LBPs can work on or supervise:

  • solid plastering
  • proprietary plaster cladding systems.

Registered plumbers and registered gasfitters are also treated as External Plastering LBPs. This is because they may have to do external plastering work as part of making and flashing the penetrations to external plastering work.

Brick and Block LBPs can be licensed in one or both of 2 areas:

  • Structural masonry
  • Masonry veneer.

Carpentry LBPs can do some of the block wall foundation RBW, such as tying steel reinforcement, if they are competent in this area.

Registered plumbers and registered gasfitters are also treated as Brick and Blocklaying LBPs. This is because they may have to do brick and blocklaying work as part of making and flashing the penetrations to brick and block work.

Foundation LBPs can work on or supervise:

  • concrete foundation walls
  • concrete slab-on-ground
  • some RBW relating to the construction and alteration of concrete or timber pile foundations.

Carpentry LBPs are able to carry out or supervise RBW covered by the Foundation licence without requiring a separate foundations licence.
