New opt-in self-certification schemes for building professionals

New opt-in self-certification schemes for trusted building professionals have been agreed by the Government and are expected to be operational by late 2026.

Responsibility for certifying some lower-risk work will move away from Building Consent Authorities (BCAs) to select individual tradespeople or companies and the schemes will only apply to entire simple residential dwellings such as single storey houses.

There will be a regulator responsible for providing oversight to ensure professionals covered by the scheme are delivering quality work for New Zealanders.

More information will be available to BCAs, building professionals and homeowners when the Bill is introduced later this year.
