Application costs

Becoming a Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP) involves paying an application fee, and an assessment fee based on the licence class you’re applying for. This page explains the application costs of standard assessments, any streamlined assessments, and combined assessment options.

When you apply to become an LBP you will need to pay the following fees:

  • An application fee of $250.00
  • An assessment fee (or fees if you apply for more than one licence).

Assessment types

The assessment types are based on your application. For example, if you hold a recognised New Zealand qualification in the licensing class you are applying for, you can use a streamlined application. This may mean you have the streamlined assessment, which has a lower fee. Check the fees table for information.

The following table sets out the assessment fees payable for each licensing class. All fees include GST.

Note about AoP (areas of practice)

All licence classes except for Carpentry include ‘Areas of Practices’ (AoPs). AoPs are specialised types of work within the scope of a licensing class that require specific competencies, skills or experience.

Carpentry and Site AoP 1 combined assessment fee

You can choose to apply for both the Carpentry and Site AoP 1 licensing class using one standard application, giving you the option to pay a combined assessment fee of $337.33 (including GST).

Both licence classes must be applied for at the same time and assessed through the standard application pathway. This allows you to submit one application and pay a single assessment fee instead of applying and paying separately for each licensing class.

1. An applicant applying for licensing in the Carpentry class using the standard application process will need to pay the following:

  • An application fee of $250.00
  • An assessment fee of $281.11

Total – $531.11

2. An applicant applying for licensing in the Carpentry and Roofing classes using the streamlined process will need to pay the following:

  • An application fee of $250.00
  • A streamlined Carpentry assessment fee of $127.78
  • A streamlined Roofing assessment fee of $127.78

Total - $505.56

3. An applicant applying for licensing in the Carpentry and Bricklaying and Blocklaying classes, using the streamlined (qualified) application process for Carpentry and the standard application process for Bricklaying and Blocklaying (one AoP), will need to pay the following:

  • An application fee of $250.00
  • A streamlined Carpentry assessment fee of $127.78
  • A standard Bricklaying and Blocklaying assessment fee of $281.11

Total - $658.89

Note

You may be offered a face-to-face interview if the evidence in your written application does not demonstrate that your skills and experience meet the relevant competencies. This will incur extra costs. You will be provided details of any extra costs when an offer of a face-to-face interview is made.
