Registrar’s update

Kia ora and welcome

The LBP Scheme has seen an increase in new applications and previously licensed practitioners returning to the scheme in recent months. Welcome to all.

It is a good sign that practitioners see licensing as a tool to highlight their expertise in a challenging market and enhance their ability to pick up a larger range of work.

New building consent exemptions added to Schedule 1 of the Building Act came into effect in August. Some projects require homeowners to engage LBPs, which is a real win for LBPs looking to sell their services. An updated guidance document has been released to help homeowners and builders understand how these exemptions may apply to them.

Building work that does not require a building consent(external link)

Our first article in this issue highlights the exemption for building sleepouts, and factors to keep in mind when building under the exemption. LBPs will not be required to provide records of work if a building consent is not required, however it is important to ensure you document the project adequately and have a written agreement with the client. If you want to brush up on your contracting knowledge we have some guidance available - you can even credit it towards your skills maintenance!
