New self-certification for plumbing and drainlaying scheme

While the new scheme is for plumbers and drainlayers, it may affect how licensed building practitioners (LBPs) coordinate and manage building projects involving eligible plumbing and drainlaying work.

What LBPs need to know

• Eligible plumbing and drainlaying work may be self-certified rather than inspected by a Building Consent Authority.
• Proposed self-certified work must be identified in the building consent application.
• Homeowners can choose to use an endorsed plumber or drainlayer or continue with the standard Building Consent Authority inspection process.

Building consent requirements remain unchanged. BCAs will continue to assess building consent applications and determine whether the proposed work complies with the Building Code before issuing a building consent.
